I hear most people using the term Laptop and Notebook as if they are the same. I guess they do the same for the term
car. Lincoln, Cadillac and Lexus are indeed cars, but not the same as say the Kia, VW or Neon. But they are all cars. Even though the laptop and the notebook are portable computers, they also have very distinct differences. When you are going through the buying process it is good to be aware of these differences to make a wise purchase. The following is a rundown of the features and benefits you will get from the two. Although I have noticed that many buyers will focus in on the shear looks first and then aim at the features.
The Laptop Computer
The name says it all. It is designed to sit it your lap while maintaining some of the large features of a desktop. Although not all laptops have the same components and features, this list is close to what you can expect;
ATI Radeon of Nvidia GeForce graphics subsystem
Internal DVD-ROM or DVD-RW driver
Large Full Functioning Keyboard
1 or 2 Processors ( Celeron, Centrino or the like)
Integrated Modem, Network, Bluetooth and WI-FI capabilities
3 – 5 hour battery life
Upgradeable
The Notebook Computer
The Notebooks smaller size does make it a very portable unit for those on the run, allowing and offering the power that users require for work, school and leisure projects. Keeping the units functionality while reducing the size often times comes at a higher cost to the end user. But as you know, we pay for convenience.
Ultralight – easy to carry
12” - 14” screen ( glossy of matte)
Thin profile
No Internal Floppy drive
Minimal graphics subsystem
Integrated Modem and Network Connection
Small but functional keyboard
Celeron – Centrino type processors
Conclusion:
While the Notebook is designed to be the most portable of the two and you do give up on some of its bigger brothers functionality, the Laptop brings the power and versatility of the Desktop PC to the lap of any user and provide portability at a good price. I personally prefer the Laptop. Its full functionality and portability makes it a good choice for my on the go lifestyle.
